Beautiful Craftsman in Mt Carmel – 267 Hillview Ave

I believe we owe it to Pottery Barn for the revival in interest in classic architecture such as Craftsman style.  We don’t have a lot of them along the peninsula, but probably one of the highest concentrations of them is in the Mt. Carmel area of Redwood City.  The last 2 Craftsman style homes in this neighborhood barely lasted 10 days on the market.  I recently put a Craftsman style home on the market in this neighborhood – 267 Hillview Avenue in Redwood City listed at $849,000. It is 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and is about 1,720sf on about a 7,000sf lot.

One of the first great features to greet you is the beautiful porch that looks back out to the trees and homes up a knoll to the west.

Once inside you immediately see some of the great Craftsman traits of this home… coved ceilings that are also coffered and the lower portion of the wall below the chair molding has texture created by using anaglypta.

A detailed arched opening takes you from the dining area into the living room which has built-in book shelves that frame the wood burning fireplace and also has the coved and coffered ceilings that the dining area has.

The living room leads into a family room which was probably the dining room when the home was originally built in 1931.  The crown molding is amazing – the lower part of it is actually the same patterened material like what is on the lower portion of the wall in the dining room.  It also has a ceiling medallion around the light fixture, beautiful moldings around the doors, and what is now the wet bar was probably once a built-in buffet and would be awesome if it were redone to go back to more of the traditional Craftsman style. The other neat feature of this room is that it is not square.  The walls behind the couch are angeled.

The kitchen doesn’t have any standout Craftsman features, but is tastefully updated and is very bright and cheery.  There is a good sized pantry in the kitchen and has a gas cooktop and an eat-in area as well.  You can see in the photo the inlay in the hardwood floor which is also present in the dining area.

In the 1980s the home was expanded at the back creating a large bedroom and a huge master suite with walk-in closet.  The large sliding glass door in the master bedroom opens out to a newly rebuilt redwood deck in the back yard.

The master bathroom was remodeled recently and features an over-sized shower and stylish his & hers farm-style sinks with rich wood cabinetry underneath and coordinating wood medicine cabinets with mirrors.

If you are searching for a home with some architectural style, 267 Hillview in Redwood City is great opportunity to own a Craftsman style home.  It has been modernized and is move-in ready but the new owner could add back in some more Craftsman touches to make this home even more of a show piece.
